What do the most effective and impactful leaders look like?

Effective leadership is one of the pillars of organizational success, but what really characterizes an efficient leader? This question was the starting point for the research conducted by the author Maria Fabrícia Alves Mota, master of the MUST University Organizational Psychology, under the guidance of Paloma Pereira de Almeida, PhD in Psychology, published in MUST Reviews XV. The study offers a detailed analysis of the main characteristics and competencies that define leaders capable of facing complex challenges and achieving extraordinary results.

Methodology and findings

Based on a Systematic Literature Review (RSL), the research analyzed 28 studies published between 2019 and 2023 on renowned platforms such as SciELO, LILACS and PePSIC. The method adopted followed strict criteria, using the PRISMA approach to guarantee the relevance and reliability of the data.

The results of the research on effective leadership highlighted, mainly, that efficient leadership is supported by a combination of competencies such as:

  • Assertive decision making and adaptability to adverse situations.
  • Strategic planning and efficient communication, essential for team alignment.
  • Positive and contemporary leadership styles that inspire, motivate and generate confidence in employees.
  • Emotional control and ability to mediate conflicts, promoting a solid organizational culture.

Furthermore, the study highlighted that effective leaders are more flexible, capable of adjusting their leadership style according to the needs of the moment and the environment, valuing teamwork and continuous learning.

The role of women in leadership

The research also brought a special focus to female leadership, highlighting characteristics such as assertiveness, willingness to take risks and a collaborative approach. These skills were described as essential for facing challenges, coordinating teams and achieving organizational goals, reinforcing the relevance of including educational strategies aimed at strengthening these skills.

After all, what do effective leaders look like?

Although there is no single ideal leadership model, the study points out that effective leaders are those aligned with the organizational culture, who value their teams and adopt strategies that promote engagement and consistent results.

This perspective reinforces the importance of adaptive leadership, capable of interpreting the specific needs of your team and the corporate environment. Leaders who balance technical skills with emotional intelligence create a solid foundation for trust and collaboration, essential for overcoming challenges and inspiring high-level performance.
